If you don’t take care of your camera memory card, you will regret

Equipment is the second life of a photographer. People who play photography will pay special attention to maintain their own equipment, after all, equipment cost a fortune! However, there is a type of photographic equipment that is obviously very important, but it is always ignored, and it did not get the attention and maintenance that it deserves, so it often breaks down. It is the memory card that we are talking about.

Do not regret when the memory card is unreadable and the precious photos you have taken are lost. From now on, take care of your memory card, and don’t let it suddenly broke down at critical moment’s

Here are 8 bad habits that may damage memory cards, please be warned!

1. Often “cut” the files

When transferring data in the memory card, some people prefer to use “cut” rather than “copy” operation, because it can save the step of “delete the original file after copying”. This seemingly convenient operation actually hides a considerable risk, once an error occurs in the transmission process, the original file cannot be recovered. For example, you accidentally touched the card during transmission, or the memory card was in poor contact … it is likely to cause the data on the memory card to disappear, and the destination folder will also be empty.

So, for the sake of safety, please operate in two steps: copy-paste and then delete the original file. And check whether the copied file is the same size as the original file.

2. Format card often

In the distant era when U disks were first born, there were some problems with old-style U disks, the available storage space sometimes became weirdly small. This requires “treatment” by formatting the U disk. Time pass by, some people still kept this old habit: format the memory card and empty the memory immediately after back up data. This is actually wrong!

In fact, for a memory card, it is best to reduce the time of formatting or only format it when it is full. This can make full use of each storage unit, which objectively is equivalent to extending the life of the memory card.

3. Process photos directly on the memory card

Many cameras support “in-camera processing. But chop photos or correct picture color is actually a process that repeatedly writes and delets data, which is not good for extending the life of the memory card. Some people use the post-processing software to directly process the photos on the memory card after connecting the camera to the computer, which will also consume the life of the memory card. The right way is to copy the photo to the computer, then process it. This will not further burden memory card and fasten processing speed.

4. Cut off the power before shut down

Many people will bring a spare memory card when shooting outside or traveling, and change card when one is full. However, during the card replacement process, some people like to pull out the card without shutting the camera down. This behavior is harmful to both the camera and the card. The problem may not happen immediately after once or twice plug, but it will happen if the number of times is too much…

Shut down before changing cards, remember please!

Another worth noting situation is “power failure”: accidentally turning off the power during data saving, deletion, formatting or playback process, or shut down due to insufficient power. The destructive power generated by the above process is similar to that of pulling out the card without shutting down. All may cause data loss or even make the memory card completely scrapped. Therefore, before formatting the memory card, deleting files, or upgrading the device firmware, you must first check the digital camera to ensure that the battery has sufficient power.

5. Use the memory card as a U disk

The current capacity of memory card is quite large, and the data transmission speed is not bad. Some people will insert the spare memory card into the card reader and use it as a U disk. This is actually very bad, because there may be virus on the computer, and once the virus infects the memory card, it is easy to cause completely data loss of the card.

When encounter virus or accidentally delete files, don’t try blindly in order to avoid causing greater damage to data and cards. If the information inside is really important, you can use antivirus software or data recovery software to repair it as soon as possible, or send it to a professional repair point for repair and data recovery.

6. Brutally plug card

Lending a card reader to others is a very frightening experience, because many people don’t seem to know that the card reader has two sides, push particularly hard when inserting a card. These fierce strongmen don’t care if they are plugged in the right side, it is easy to break the pins of your card reader course, their memory card will end up badly too.

As shown in the figure above, there are many pins on the memory card, which are very thin and easy to fold. The image information is transmitted through the fragile pins from the camera to the memory card. If they are broken, they will have poor contact. Not only the card reader, but the camera card slot is also divided into front and back. Pay attention to the direction when inserting the card. Use light and even strength to avoid hurting the fragile pin structure.

7. Shake during work

When the memory card is writing data, it is best not to shake the body significantly, especially for older cameras and memory cards.

The reason is also very simple. The memory card and card slot will wear out after many times of insertion and removal, the tightness of the joint will decrease, and shaking during the work process may cause poor contact and data loss.

8. Bad storage environment

Don’t think it’s done after removing the memory card from the camera. In fact, memory cards are also very fragile and have certain requirements for the storage environment. Specifically, avoid use and store cards under high magnetic, high temperature, high humidity environment, do not place the memory card in high temperature or direct sunlight, and avoid static electricity and magnetic fields.

In addition, it is best not to jam the memory card everywhere, to avoid irreversible physical damage, such as deformation, or even breaking under the action of external forces. You can create a place to store memory cards; you can also wrap them in plastic boxes, cloth or paper towels; if possible, you can also buy special memory card bags and card cases.

I still have to say that as for memory card, the expensive ones are better, their reading and writing speed is faster, and the probability of break down will be smaller. However, no matter how high-quality brand-name goods, cannot survive regular torture. So, pay attention to it when use it, fot the sake of your card, your data, and your wallet!
